چکیده

Recently, bioethicists and the UNCRPD have advocated for supported medical decision-making on behalf of patients with intellectual disabilities. But what does really entail? One compelling framework is Anita Silvers Leslie Francis’ mental prosthesis account, which envisions as a process in trustees act mere appendages patient’s will; trustee provides cognitive tools patient requires to realize her conception own good. Moment-to-moment fluctuations in neuronal excitability bias subjective perception rather than decision-making

Perceiving an external stimulus not only depends on the physical features of the stimulus, but also fundamentally on the current state of neuronal excitability, indexed by the power of ongoing alpha oscillations. Recent studies suggest that heightened excitability does not improve perceptual acuity, but biases observers to report the presence of a stimulus regardless of its physical presence. I...

Shared Mental Models & Decision-Making

The Problem: Decision-making among members of a group entails aggregating the opinions of the constituents. If the opinions are unconstrained, then concensus typically fails when any vote is taken. In contrast, when opinions reflect a shared model of the domain, then concensus is likely, assuming members can communicate accurately the reasons for their individual choices. Federated Databases and Supported Decision Making

Currently, information required to make informed choices of appropriate assistive technology products is scattered among broad, general-purpose databases and narrow, focused databases. The vocabulary used to describe features has not been standardized, and can be very hard to interpret by end-users of assistive technology. The described project will create a federated Unified Listing of assisti...

Can Causal Sense-Making Benefit Foresight, Rather than Biasing Hindsight?

Upon reading headlines like “Traffic Fatalities Increased/Decreased Last Year,” people often overestimate how well they would have anticipated changes. This hindsight bias has been linked to causal sensemaking that minimizes one’s feeling of surprise after learning an outcome. In this paper, we consider whether the sensemaking process, which contributes to bias in hindsight, could be recruited ...
